Baby Aacht naming

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

3. Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. 4. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth. 5. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court. Psalms 127:3-5

Mr & Mrs Aacht named their bundle of joy on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at the Holy Ghost Temple of the International Central Gospel Church, Frafraha in Accra.

Family members and friends were present to witness the joyous occasion and lend their support.

We thank God for His gift to the Aachts and pray His blessings and protection over the little one, a boy, and the family. Below are some images captured at the naming performed by Rev. William Owiredu. #Edmages #canonshots #childnaming #icgcholyghosttemple

Tears as Jayne goes home

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

On Saturday, November 4, 2023, the late Journalist and Actress, Jayne Cordelia Araba Ntsifuaa Buckman-Owoo was gathered to her ancestors at a solemn Funeral and Burial Mass at the St. Theresa Catholic Church in Accra.

Tears came down unrestrained down the cheeks of family members, loved ones from the Graphic Communications Group Ltd where she worked till she passed, members of the parish where she was sent off and school mates, for the departed who gave up the ghost on Friday, August 18, 2023.

Also in attendance to bid farewell to their departed colleague were some members of the arts industry.

The memories captured by #Edmages tell the story better. Lord in thy gracious keeping leave we now thy servant sleeping. There the tears of earth are dried; there its hidden things are clear; There the work of life is tried by a juster Judge than here. Rest in Peace Jayne, till we meet again.

Joy overflow as Eben, Juliet tie knot

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved (c)

On October 14, 2023, two love birds, Ebenezer Afful and Juliet Akyaa Safo, a journalist with the Daily Graphic, had their cherished dream of going to the altar fulfilled, when they got joined together in Holy Matrimony at the Liberty Centre of the Assemblies of God Church at Akweteyman in Accra.

Their liberation was evident after the nuptials and signing ceremony, as they danced their hearts out to music provided by Gospel act Akese Brempong.

Family, friends and loved ones present joined the couple to rejoice and praise God for His goodness. Well, #Edmages was present too and shares some images from the wedding ceremony of the Affuls.

We wish them marriage bliss and an exciting journey together.

Nana Ama Eson-Mensah...So much love

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved (C)

It was a tough one deciding on the appropriate headline for this post. Farewell? No because we will meet again, God willing. Bye-bye? No! Our paths will cross again soon.

'So much love' is what I settled on because in the few weeks you worked with us, you exuded so much of humanity towards everyone you had to work with or encountered.

Bless you for being who you are Nana Ama. Don't change who you are because that is what we love about you. We all wish you well in all your endeavours and let's see you again soon.

Below are some pics from the small get-together you held at the newsroom to say thank you to all who had assisted in making your stay worth the while and a memorable one.

It is true...she's gone...Ms Jayne

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

A memorial mass for Actress and Journalist, Jayne Buckman-Owoo at the St Theresa's Parish of the Roman Catholic Church, Kaneshie in Accra on Friday, August 25, 2023, put away any doubt that she had indeed departed this world to the next.

Family members, friends and staff members of the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) were present in their numbers to remember Ms Buckman-Owoo, who until her death was a Staff Writer of the GCGL with the Graphic Showbiz, for all she stood for and how she affected all those around her positively.

Hmm! Difficult to believe but Ms Jayne as she was affectionately called by many is no more with the living and the sombre gathering last Friday of friends and family confirmed that.

We as mere mortals can only say, may the soul of the departed rest in perfect peace. Dayie Jayne Cordelia Araba Ntsifuaa Buckman-Owoo.

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

What a shocker you have given us this morning Jayne. We were so unprepared for this news this wet morning. Wow! How? Why?

Well I guess we cannot undo what has already happened. We give glory to God for your life and the fact that we got to know and associate ourselves with you.

Ms Jayne who would mention my name in full like you did anytime you saw me? This cuts deep.

We will console ourselves with the memories we made and shared together Jayne. Rest well till we meet again.

Wey Gey Hey prays to God

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

It was nothing short of beautiful and proper to see parents and final year students of Wesley Girls' High School in Cape Coast pray together as one entity last Saturday to God.

The spiritually charged and emotional atmosphere of thanksgiving to the Almighty for taking the girls through three years of studies on the Kakum Hill (Kakumdo) and supplication to see them through the remaining days and especially in their final exams, the WASSCE, makes it certain that God was there too and heard every fervent prayer from the parents and their wards.

All thanks to the Parent Teachers Association and the school authorities led my Headmistress, Mrs Jeannette Ruby Siameh, it was a very successful programme which was commended by all parents.

Indeed, as Mrs Siameh put it succinctly, at Wesley Girls' they believe in working very hard but also seek God's strength and support.

Rainy day at the Summer Palace

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

One of the ironies of life happened to a group of African journalists on a 10-month fellowship who were visiting the Summer Palace in China in 2017.

Destroyed during the Second Opium War of the 1850s, the palace was reconstructed by Emperor Guangxu for use by Empress Dowager Cixi and renamed the Summer Palace.

The Summer Palace is a vast ensemble of lakes, gardens and palaces in Beijing in the Haidian District, 15km from downtown Beijing.

It was an imperial garden in the Qing dynasty. Inside includes Longevity Hill Kunming Lake and Seventeen Hole Bridge. It covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometres, three-quarters of which is water.

Although the journalists were expecting some sunshine to reflect its name, the rains came down, thus forcing everyone to seek refuge under an umbrella or from a raincoat.

Despite the rain the journalists had fun touring the old museum located at 19 Xinjiangongmen Rd, Hai Dian Qu, North West of Beijing, China, on June 6, 2017.

Below are some pictures captured by #Edmages during the umbrella moments.

Greater Works 2023...Yellow Sundays

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

This year’s GREATER WORKS conference of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), comes off from Monday, July 31 to Friday, August 4, 2023 at the ICGC’s Christ Temple East auditorium at Teshie in Accra.

The church institutionalised “Greater Works” from the words of Jesus Christ in the Biblical text in John 14:12 when He said: "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do".

The conference is, therefore, a call on participants to go out after the five-day encounter and do greater works in all aspects of their lives.

The Greater Works Conference can be traced back to the various camp meetings organised by the church right from the mid-1980s when the church was growing and getting established.

The annual flagship event of ICGC was officially instituted in 1987 at the Baden Powell Hall, Accra, with an attendance of about 2,000 congregants.

Ministering this year alongside the General Overseer, Ps Dr Mensa Otabil will be Ps Matthew Ashimolowo of Kingsway International Christian Centre in the United Kingdom, Bishop Tudor Bismark of Jabula New Life Covenant Church Harare, Zimbabwe and Dr Mike Okonkwo, the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), Nigeria.

As a prelude to the great gathering of God’s children and also to publicise it, the churches belonging to the ICGC fold have declared all Sundays before the event a ‘Yellow Sunday’ meaning all congregants wear a ‘T’ shirt of the ICGC that is yellow, to church.

#Edmages has captured some of the congregants in their beautiful yellow and shares them with you. #greaterworks2023 #weareicgc #icgcholyghosttemple #40daysofpower #icgcinternational #yearofgathering

Slaying to see Max off

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

It was a sorrowful day on Saturday, May 27, 2023, when staff of the Graphic Communications Group joined friends and family members at the Holy Ghost Temple of the International Central Gospel Church, Frafraha, Accra, to send off Maxwell Etse Ocloo who had passed at the prime age of 36.

Emotions were high as many shed tears for the departed. But going by the Akan adage which translates loosely in English that "Even when one is crying he or she stops to blow his or her nose", it was noticed that although the event was a sad one, the attendees were all looking resplendent in their attires as if to say they were in their best mourning clothes to bid the departed bye.

The occasion also presented a platform for colleagues and friends who had not seen each other in a long while to fraternise.

Well, the lens of Edmages captured some of the attendees at the funeral spotting their well tailored or designed attires and shares them here.

Lydia turns 60

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

It is always a joy and an epoch worth celebrating when anyone turns a year older.

Albeit, there are some landmark ages which cannot go without celebrating, such as attaining the age of 60.

In many jurisdictions, 60 is also the age at which workers go on compulsory retirement from work.

On Sunday June 11, 2023, Mrs Lydia Adjei, a teacher by profession who has been blessed with 60 years on the earth, opted to celebrate the goodness of God at her church, the Emmanuel Congregation of the Presbyterian Church at Tebibiano in Accra.

Family, congregants and friends were at the church to celebrate with her. They danced, made merry and prayed with her.

#Edmages captured some moments of the service and celebration. #canonshots #birthday

Father's Day 2023

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

Father's Day is a holiday honouring one's father, or relevant father figure, as well as fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society.

The origin of the day, however, is varied. One account says the celebration of the day dates back to 1908 when a church in West Virginia held a ceremony to honour 385 men who died in a coal mine explosion the previous year.

According to History.com, the following year a Washington state woman led a movement to establish a day to honour fathers similar to Mother's Day.

Another account says Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, is usually credited for originating Father’s Day. She is said to have had the idea in 1909 while listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, which was emerging as a holiday.

U.S. President Calvin Coolidge gave his public support to Father’s Day in 1924, and legislation signed by U.S. President Richard Nixon established it as a national holiday in 1972.

This year, the Day fell on Sunday, June 18. It was a beautiful day at many churches which honoured fathers and preached on the duty and relevance of fathers in the home and society.

Tears flow for Maxwell

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

What a sorrowful Saturday it was on May 27 when the Graphic Communications Group Limited saw off two staff who had gone to be with the Lord.

The late Maxwell Etse Yao Ocloo's funeral was the most sullen as he had passed at a prime age of 36 after a short illness.

Indeed the sombre gathering and the tears that were shed uncontrollably by colleagues, friends and family members at the Holy Ghost Temple of the International Central Gospel Church, Frafraha in Accra, said it all.

Why did such a young promising and affable man have to leave so early, many asked. But the answer rests with the giver of life - God, who no mortal can question. Rest in perfect peace Maxwell.

#Edmages was present to capture some of the sorrowful moments at the funeral.

Tagoe Sisters sing for mothers

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

For almost 20 minutes Gospel Music duo, the Tagoe Sisters, spotting a unique hairdo and attired in a Felicia fabric, dished out well known music from their repertoire, as congregants responded in equal measure singing alongside and dancing to the popular tunes of yesteryears in praise to God for His goodness.

These were "Fa bibiara ma no", "Osombo" and "Watua maka" among others.

It was Sunday, May 14, 2023, a day set aside to celebrate mothers worldwide, which also coincided with the 10th anniversary of the women's ministry of the Holy Ghost Temple, International Central Gospel Church, Frafraha, Accra.

This year also marks 40 years of singing by the twin sisters and so joining the Precious Vessels of Virtue (PVV) of Holy Ghost Temple to celebrate their anniversary as well as honour the women was not out of place.

#Edmages captured few shots which it shares here.

He was gathered to his ancestors on April 2, 2023 after being taken ill.

The 1983 Year Group of Mfantsipim School (MOBA) and other past students attended in their numbers to bid farewell to a brother who had accomplished the work His creator assigned to him on this earth.

For all the saints who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest. Alleluia! Alleluia!

In the sweet by and by we shall meet on that beautiful shore.

My Encounter with King of the United Kingdom

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

My first time seeing the King of the United Kingdom, King Charles III, in the flesh was on November 3, 2018 at Jamestown in Accra, when I covered his visit to the community on a very hot day.

Five years ago, the then Prince of Wales referred to as Prince Charles was accompanied by his wife, now Queen Camilla, who was then the Duchess of Cornwall.

Time has not only flown, but levels have also changed with Prince Charles (heir apparent), being crowned as the King of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms.

His coronation at Westminster Abbey in London on Saturday, May 6, 2023, makes him the oldest monarch to be crowned in British history, and first King after the reign of his maternal grandfather, King George VI and mother Queen Elizabeth II, who reigned for 70 years.

One can also state that he has been the only heir apparent in the British Monarchy to have waited this long, having been only three years old when his mother acceded to the throne in 1952.

An elated then 10-year-old sensation, DJ Switch aka Erica Armah Bra-Bulu Tandoh, couldn’t have put it better when she described her meeting with the Prince thus: “I am short of words. In fact, I feel very happy speaking with the Prince and playing for the prince. One thing that got me surprised was that every Prince is somehow young; and I was surprised that he is old and a prince. That is when I realised that Queen Elizabeth has been a queen for a long time.”

Visit

Well during his visit in 2018 and my encounter with him, King Charles who wore a grey suit and Queen Camilla in a cream attire, came prepared for the harsh weather as they both spotted their sun shades when the sun got unfriendly.

The Queen had in addition an umbrella and a kente-designed fan, with which she would occasionally fanned herself to cool the blazing rays of the sun on her skin.

The royal couple who were accompanied by the wife of Ghana’s Vice-President, Samira Bawumia, began their tour at the ArchiAfrika gallery, which displayed a mixture of architecture art, intriguing designs and photography. Some of the splendid art works were that of late global icons, former South African President Nelson Mandela and boxing legend, Mohammed Ali.

As if that was to usher them to the citadel of Ghanaian boxing, then Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla also watched some boxing exhibitions that were supervised by no other than Ghana, Africa and global boxing great, Azumah Nelson, affectionately called the Boxing Professor among other endearing accolades.

Also on hand to receive the august guests was the then World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Super Bantamweight Champion, Isaac Dogboe.

They were also entertained with some football joggling skills by some youth. While the couple watched in admiration and amazement they would occasionally shout “not here” when the football strayed in their direction. That always drew laughter from the people around.

Let’s reminisce the King’s last visit to Ghana through the lens of #Edmages

Auntie Kate's 80th birthday dance

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

“If you’ll hold on to me for dear life,” says GOD, “I’ll get you out of any trouble. I’ll give you the best of care if you’ll only get to know and trust me. Call me and I’ll answer, be at your side in bad times; I’ll rescue you, then throw you a party. I’ll give you a long life, give you a long drink of salvation!” - Psalms 91:14-16 The Message (MSG)

These verses epitomise what occurred on Sunday, April 23, 2023, as family, friends and loved ones joined Madam Kate Ribeiro aka Auntie Kate, to celebrate her 80th birthday.

Indeed it was a very joyous occasion and Auntie Kate couldn't hide her joy as she danced and danced in appreciation of God's goodness to her. We wish her more years in good health and prosperity.

Kessewa @ 50 dinner...What a parade of fascinators!

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

I counted more than 50 fascinating fascinators, which was part of the dress code for ladies attending Georgina Kessewa Nyamekye's 50th Birthday Dinner dubbed "50 shades of fabulous".

I saw the men present also resplendent in their Black Suits, with White Shirts and Black Bow Ties - That was also the prescribed attire for all invited men. The date was Sunday, March 12, 2023, the venue, Legendary Capital Events at Dansoman, Accra and the atmosphere was alluring.

So picture ladies in their long coloured dinner dresses with the men in their all black suits/tuxedos sitting around carefully arranged and decorated tables and you would vividly see the ambience at the venue.

And oo, at both ends of the hall were a live band and backdrop, as well as food and drinks. The smiling faces of the guests showed that they were ready to have a good time while celebrating Gina, a selfless person who has touched many lives.

Well, yours truly #Edmages was able to capture some images for your viewing pleasure. Let's see who were there.

50 Shades of Mama Gee...Worship Edition

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

So on the day that Ghana celebrated her 66th Independence Day Anniversary, the Heavens came down in worship at the ICGC's Christ Temple at Abossey Okai.

You can call it the divine celebration of Ps Georgina Kessewa Nyamekye's (Mama Gee) 50th birthday. She chose to celebrate her day with friends and loved ones, just offering worship to the Most High God for all His goodness shown to her in her five decades on earth.

Indeed it was a time of refreshing and the atmosphere was charged with praises and worship led by renowned men and women of worship to the Almighty God. It is little wonder that after the worship the rains came down at dawn the following day, Tuesday, March 7, 2023.

Well, #Edmages was able to capture some spirit-filled images at the worship celebration and shares a couple of them.

2023 National Chocolate Day

Last Tuesday was observed globally as St. Valentine's Day, a day to express love to all. Ghana, however, has since 2005 commemorated the day as a National Chocolate Day to drive the consumption of more cocoa products in the country.

Ghana, although currently the second largest cocoa producer consumes very little of the product. Did you offer any loved or receive a bar of chocolate from a friend on February 14, 2013? Share your experience with us.

Zadok & Benedicta 2022...Graphic & Times No. 4

Pictures by Edmund Smith-Asante. All Rights Reserved ©

Before the year 2022 rolled to an end, two journos, Zadok and Benedicta, decided to tie the knot and so became husband and wife before we saw off the eventful year.

Incidentally, the solemnisation of holy matrimony between the two at the Abundant Life Worship Center at Accra New Town on December 24, became the fourth time that a partnership had been struck between two Ghanaian state media (newspapers) - Daily Graphic (DG) and Ghanaian Times (GT), through marriage.

The first to open the flood gates through this union were Nana Konadu Agyeman of the DG and Ama Tekyiwaa of the GT in 2015. Then followed Charles Andoh of the DG and Linda Audrey Aryeetey of the GT in December 2018.

Before then the GT decided to also pick a flower from a sister paper of the DG, The Mirror, by sending Yaw Kyei to come fetch Efia Akese, a journo on the paper.

Congratulations to the fourth Graphic/Times marriage couple, Zadok and Benedicta. Who are going to be the next?

#Edmages captured some exciting scenes from the event and shares them below.
